2005 - present: Freelance web developer
I currently work as a freelance web developer for a variety of clients across the UK, from small local businesses to large agencies. Typical projects include:
- Front-end development, CSS and advanced DHTML (jQuery being a personal favourite)
- ASP.NET development, including the development of several specalised CMS-based sites for large brand names
- PHP development, from simple promotional sites and to high-volume content and e-commerce sites
- Platform-based sites such as Drupal and Umbraco
I also act as a team and project consultant for some clients, helping them with planning their development strategy, recruitment and training.
2000 - 2005: Web developer to Development Manager
Wanting to get into the internet side of things, I joined McCann-i, the online unit of McCann-Erickson Manchester (now McCann Erickson Communications House), as a web developer. Starting with simple sites I worked up towards running a team of developers building large interactive and e-commerce sites for major global brands.
I began with the basic web technologies like HTML and simple ASP and worked through a wide range of internet technologies, finally specialising in .NET

- MCMS (Microsoft Content Management Server) and custom CMS.

1995 - 2000: Programmer to Team Leader
Started as a mainframe programmer for a parcel company, before working my way to Windows programming as team leader, via a stint as network administrator
Gained exposure to the basic disciplines of programming in a commercial environment, as well as to a huge range of tools and technologies, including
- Mainframe style programming
- Network administration, support and troubleshooting
- Windows programming (Windows 95, 98, NT) using Visual Basic and C
- Imaging and document management
- Team management
